Eduardo 'Teddy' Bautista, Executive President of SGAE, Presented
With Special
Achievement Award
BMI named "Mi Sangre
Prisionera," written by Enrique
Valencia and published by Tigres Del Norte Ediciones Musicales,
Latin Song of the Year; Jorge
Massias Gómez (SACM) was named Songwriter of the Year; and
Warner-Tamerlane Publishing
Corp. was named Latin Publisher of the Year at the performing
rights organization's fifth annual
Latin Music Awards presentation in Coral Gables, Florida. The
ceremony honored top Latin
songwriters and music publishers at a 300-person gala dinner at
the Country Club Ballroom of the
Biltmore Hotel.
BMI President and CEO Frances W. Preston hosted the
ceremonies at which Citations of
Achievement were given to the writers and publishers of the 50
Latin songs most performed on
American radio and television during the eligibility period of
July 1, 1996 through June 30, 1997.
The evening was highlighted by the presentation of a special
Citation of Achievement to Eduardo
"Teddy" Bautista, Executive President of Spanish performing
rights organization SGAE, for his
contributions to the international growth of Latin music.
Bautista was also honored earlier in the
week by MIDEM Latin America and Caribbean as their 1998 Man of
the Year.
Enrique Valencia's hit "Mi Sangre Prisionera," recorded by
Los Tigres Del Norte, was the
most performed song during the eligibility period and won Song
of the Year designation.
Jorge Massias Gómez, a member of the Mexican performing
rights organization SACM,
was named Songwriter of the Year after receiving 3 Citations of
Achievement tonight, the most for
one writer. Gomez wrote "Juguete," "Te Aprovechas" (both
recorded by Grupo Límite) and
"Nube Viajera" recorded by Alejandro Fernández.
Other songwriters receiving multiple awards during the
ceremony were Kiko Cibrián and
Kiko Man ("Cómo Es Posible Que A Mi Lado" and "Dame"); and José
Alfredo Jiménez
Sandoval ("Me Equivoqué Contigo" and "Para Morir Iguales").
Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Corp. received its first Latin
Publisher of the Year designation,
representing eight of the award winning songs for its companies
Warner-Tamerlane and Rightsong
Music, Inc. In addition, a number of other publishers were
honored with multiple awards including
Amsedel Publishing, De Luna Publishing Co., Gary Hobbs Music,
EMI-Blackwood Music, Inc.,
peermusic, Songs of PolyGram International, Inc., Sony-ATV Songs
LLC and Tigres Del Norte
Ediciones Musicales.
